At Alexander McQueen’s spring ’17 runway show in Paris on Monday, creative director Sarah Burton toughened up her gossamer fine-lace frocks with a stampede of meticulously crafted hobnail boots.

These outdoorsy specimens at Alexander McQueen took their cue from the rugged Shetland Island landscape that inspired the collection and stomped out in both flat and heeled versions, ankle high and to the knee.

All were emboldened with hammered metal studs and shiny, military-inspired toe and heel caps, but more intricate versions came embellished with delicate, hand-wrought Spitalfields lace embroidery and mother-of-pearl beadwork.

Another take on the theme were traces of tiny silver sequins like the foam of waves crashing the Scottish coast, while the show piece was, beyond doubt, a fragile floral applique — albeit it with a heavy-metal edge.
