The current vogue for sock boots and spray-on thigh-high-and-beyond numbers (think Balenciaga spring 2017) proved to be catnip for today’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris. It provided the label the perfect bridge through which to translate the lingerie concept with its stockings-and-suspender vibes into the arena of high fashion.
The footwear was created by shoe supremo Brian Atwood for the second year, and the hero of the hour was his heeled stocking boot. This came in all manner of guises in accordance with the different themes of the show, and VS Angels Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Sara Sampaio, Kendall Jenner and Hadid sisters Bella and Gigi pulled them on and off to great effect.
The South American-inspired “Road Ahead” theme elicited versions of the stocking boot festooned with tassels, while “Mountain Romance” — with its homespun “Little House on the Prairie” vibes — featured soaring styles embroidered with florals reminiscent of an old-school sampler. The fetishistic “Secret Angel” was all about the more traditional, dominatrix style black patent.
“There are some over-the-knee boots that have craftsmanship that blew our mind,” said Atwood prior to the show. “They’re really couture boots with inlaid suedes, pythons, silks, fringing and beading.”
“We’ve done nude stockings embellished with Swarovski,” he continued of his pièce de résistance look sported by Josephine Skriver. “It was really a fun project.”
The look, created in collaboration with Swarovski, consisted of the sheerest-body-stocking-cum-boots imaginable; they were peppered with thousands of miniscule crystals glittering like iridescent raindrops.
Sports socks and sandals? Mais oui.
Stocking-boot alternative was the thigh-high-sports-sock-with-platform-sandal combo, making for an exaggerated version of the hipster socks ‘n’ sandals trend. Special mention, though, goes out to the ankle-high lace-up booties sprouting mini feathered wings — perfectly matching the macro ones sported on the backs of the Victoria’s Secret Angels themselves.
