‘Tis the season for decadent displays in the Big Apple. Major retailers have adorned their windows with all the bells and whistles imaginable to lure and entertain passersby as consumers get into the holiday shopping frenzy.

It’s a tradition that began in the 1870s with Macy’s — and it has since grown into an annual pageant of panes for many New York City department stores.

FN takes a look at the whimsical extravaganzas delighting spectators and shoppers.

Macy’s
What: The originator of the over-the-top holiday window display fulfills its reputation with “Believe,” an installation inspired by nostalgia. The visually stunning display includes six themes that play out traditional stories featuring elves, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and more. The 9th annual “Believe” campaign supports the Make-A-Wish foundation. During peak hours, nearly 10,000 people pass by the windows.
Where: Macy’s Herald Square, 151 W. 34th St, New York, N.Y.
Running: Now through Jan. 2.

Meanwhile, “Candy Couture” is the theme of the flagship store, featuring bespoke dresses from Erdem, Carolina Herrera, Marchesa and Jason Wu — with wares inspired by cotton candy, peppermint sticks, cake frosting and more.
Where: 611 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. (“Candy Couture”); and more stores.
Running: Through Jan. 2.
