“I was waiting for the right partner who I could trust and has an amazing history in building brands, and [Pentland execs] Stephen and Carrie [Rubin] … are the [people] I’ve dreamed of having,” the designer said. She noted that she can now hire sales assistants and build an infrastructure to expand her global presence with key retailers.
Since her 2011 launch, Tapia has become a brand to watch, landing key accounts, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale’s. Her whimsical shoes and playful takes on the kitten heel have become signature elements.
Tapia recently expanded outside the U.S., landing in Harvey Nichols in London and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. “I am ready to be a global brand and be big,” Tapia said, noting that she wants to get to the same level as the industry’s power players.
With another year and a half to go in the Incubator program and a new round of funding, Tapia on her way.
