Melissa McCarthy is an entourage all on her own. The comedic force’s latest film, “Spy,” had a strong debut at the box office this weekend, outpacing blockbuster hopeful “Entourage.”
Early industry figures said “Spy” earned nearly $30 million over the weekend, proving that McCarthy is a bankable star. McCarthy, who has been making the red carpet and late-night talk show rounds in elegant dresses and heels, plays a deskbound CIA analyst who gets unleashed into the field.
The 44-year-old “Mike & Molly” star, who is often spotted in shoes by close friend Brian Atwood, made further headlines in recent weeks when she revealed that her long-awaited clothing line will debut this summer. The apparel collection, which will include plus sizes, has been in the works for several years. It will be sold at select department and specialty stores.
The actress, who once trained as a designer, told FN sister publication WWD last year that she’s been designing “since grade school. I’d lay on the floor, look through Vogue and cut out patterns. It was everything I ever wanted to do.”
While McCarthy dominated box-office sales this weekend, the competition will intensify soon as all eyes turn to the premiere of “Jurassic World.”
