When clouds rolled into Manhattan last week, commuters came prepared with footwear that could withstand the elements. Donning colorful and classic boots from brands like Hunter, Tommy Hilfiger and Burberry, these locals proved that a rainy day can’t dampen their personal style.
Classic Hunter Wellies made a strong showing on the streets of New York City, while many opted for popular prints and polka-dotted rainboots. Tretorn also made an appearance, along with Coach.
New Yorkers are often caught in the rain as they walk to and from work, and many don’t want to sacrifice style just because of a midday shower. Brands have caught on to this and are offering a modern spin on the traditional rainboot.
These days, Wellies often mirror current trends in fashion styles, with moto boots, sneakers, Chelsea boots and even ballet flats getting the rubber treatment. Brands taking the cue include Nine West and Sperry, which have elevated designs with rubber strapping and metal buckles, giving the rainboots a street-style edge. Sam Edelman’s Tinsely puts a leopard print on a Chelsea boot silhouette, while Däv’s Holloway Cuff rainboot is a moto-inspired look.
For consumers looking for a more luxury rainboot, Saint Laurent recently showed off its spring ’16 runway rainboots. The collection included tall rainboots in a black and olive rubber finish, fit with oversized silver buckles. Other styles had black sequins or a floral print in tapestry.
