Ask An Editor: Block Heels On A Budget

I recently had a pressing shoe question in my inbox of which I think many will be able to relate to. The fact that it was from my sister Sophie made it all the more delightful. Finding a block heel that checks all the boxes is essential for summery pursuits.

Here, I’m sharing our conversation and subsequent search for a quality, cool, bang-on sandal that a) doesn’t cost a fortune and b) can easily be adapted for day or night.

Just in time for her Roman Holiday, I think we found a winner.

Mosha:

I’ve been searching for the perfect go to summer sandals (open toe, a small block heel) for ages and can’t seem to find a pair that matches my budget, color, or the right heel height.

Not too high, not too low (in terms of the heel and the price) I’m thinking 3″ or less for the heel. I want to be able to slip them on (or a quick and easy closure) and run around town this summer in NY as for my trip to Europe. I would love to be able to wear them all day with jean shorts and with my favorite summer dresses to twirl in at night too. Would I be asking too much if I wanted something comfortable? Just to note, a subtle 90’s grandma vibe is fine by me!

In terms of color, I’m dreaming of something tan, black or both. I’m not opposed to a bit of leopard or snakeskin or gold for a bit of snazziness too.

Remember last season those Fendi and Veronique Branquinho ones you had me try on? They were similar to these. I would love to find something in this vein.

Veronique Branquinho Veronique Branquinho sandals, $221. Shoescribe.com

Amazing, but a bit out of my price range. Something like that though. I’m leaving for my Roman holiday very soon…

Thanks so much,

Sophie

Soph,
No worries – I am on this. What do you think of these? Made in Italy, good height, block heel without being too blocky, you know?

Okay I know these are blowing the budget, but I just had to share these dreamers. Would look amazing on you/with everything. And on sale!

Wait wait wait. I found a pair that I think ticks all the boxes. Budget friendly sale pick? Check. Slight ’90s vibe? Check. Spot-on heel to strap chunkiness ratio? Check, check.

The fact that these are produced by the same company that makes the Branquinho’s that got away last season, makes them shoe siblings too. Quick! Click to buy before I do. We are the same size, don’t forget.

Mosha,

The Chloe’s are everything. Grazie Grazie! Can’t wait to wear these to wander the colosseum and Trevi Fountain à la Audrey. Just watched Roman Holiday last night to get inspired for my vacation look.
