“I am a platform girl through and through,” Jessica Simpson told FN during an interview for the cover of Spy Magazine last February.
At the time, Simpson was planning her wedding to Eric Johnson and had just launched her latest Weight Watchers campaign, showcasing her post pregnancy weight loss. With a billion-dollar brand at hand, she was open about why her label resonates with consumers.
“We are an all-American brand that all different kinds of women across America and the world can wear,” Simpson said. “We offer something for everyone — its not just limited to one certain fashionista. Women of all shapes, sizes and pocketbooks can enjoy our products. That is something that has always been very important to me.”
For Simpson, another critical part of the equation has been her family’s extensive involvement in the venture.
“My business is my family. My sister Ashlee works with us on the line, and I’ve built the collection alongside my mother, Tina. She’s been an inspiration my entire life,” she said. (Ashlee Simpson currently serves as co-creative director of the Jessica Simpson girls’ line, which offers teen and tween apparel.
While a lot has changed for Simpson’s label since the interview – the brand is now owned by Sequential Brands after sitting with Camuto Group since 2005 – we are taking a look back at a few of her favorite things.
Accessory she treasures the most: “My engagement ring. It’s a vintage Tiffany & Co. ring designed by Neil Lane.”
Best kids’ footwear looks: “Maxwell is running around everywhere now, so cute rocker- style sneakers, little booties, girly sandals and, of course, anything with glitter.”
Style secrets: “Day to day, I love mixing casual with glam, like pairing denim with statement accessories or a great blazer. But overall, my biggest fashion advice starts from within, feeling confident in my own skin.”
