Outsole and shoe company Vibram has acquired Quabaug Corp., its U.S. manufacturing and distribution partner since 1965.

Vibram USA and Quabaug will now do business as Quabuag Vibram Innovation (QVI), Virbram said today in a statement announcing the merger.

“For over 50 years, Quabaug has been the proud manufacturer and distributor of Vibram’s renowned rubber soling products,” said Mike Gionfriddo, Vibram USA’s CEO, in the release. “This merger ensures we maintain our U.S.-based craftsmanship and quality, and improve the service we provide to our North American customers.”

The newly formed QVI, the company said, will allow Vibram to focus its resources on the development and commercialization of North American products.

Vibram said it also has plans to invest in QVI with new and advanced manufacturing technologies and equipment.

“As a result, the Vibram customer will benefit from the new product development process, laboratory validation, streamlined communications and heightened innovation,” the company said in a release.

During their five-decade partnership, Quabuag and Vibram have collaborated to design and manufacture rubber compounds such as Megagrip, Idrogrip and XS Grip and their products serve the outdoor, athletic and industrial categories.

“The Quabaug Corporation has a heritage of quality manufacturing dating back to 1916,” said Kevin Donahue, Quabaug’s chairman in a release.  “Our associates are honored to join the Vibram USA team and form the world’s preeminent soling company. Vibram’s investment in Quabaug is an investment in all of us.”
