How did Paul Andrew celebrate his big CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund victory? “The boys from Public School, last year’s winners, were so generous to host a passing-of-the-torch after-party,” Andrew told FN Spy. “We had a lot of fun.” Before the fête got started, the designer — who nabbed FN’s Launch of the Year award in 2013 — said he shared the news with his mom and “insatiably hard-working team back in the design studio.” Here, Andrew dishes on other major moments from the evening and opens up about his turn on TV.

Joan Smalls was your guest for the evening. What makes her style stand out?
“She’s clearly a beauty, but there’s also an ease about her that makes her instantly likeable. Her presence and outward confidence make her a style star. There are those people in life that have it, and she’s certainly one of them.”

How will you use the award money?
“I’m eager to launch a men’s shoe collection.”

Do you still hope to have Mark Parker as your mentor? (Andrew receives mentoring as part of the win.)
“Mark Parker would be an incredible mentor. He has such an inspirational story, and I find Nike’s ideals to be very aligned with those of Paul Andrew. My brand is rooted in comfort and performance, and I feel like it could be an amazing match.”

“The Fashion Fund” series premiered on Ovation last week. What was it like to be in front of the camera?
“The cameras were admittedly rather distracting, but I developed a great relationship with the production team, and I will miss not seeing them now on a daily basis. I am, however, dreading the thought of seeing myself on-screen, so I probably won’t watch the show, but the international exposure it promises to bring the brand is exciting.”
