The India-based firm introduced its latest brand, Lechal (translating to “take me there” in Hindi), which produces footwear soles and insoles featuring tactile feedback technology, often called haptics.
Users enter their destination on a smartphone app, which then connects to the shoes through Bluetooth. The phone’s GPS system will calculate the direction to the intended location and alert the wearer via simple vibrations in the footwear.
Tapping into the trend for sportswear, Lechal’s haptic style also counts steps and measures calories burned, allowing customers to customize workouts.
Ducere, which was launched in 2011 by Krispian Lawrence and Anirudh Sharma, initially designed the product to increase mobility for the visually impaired, but the founders realized the technology could benefit anyone’s daily routine. The company uses proceeds from the sale of Lechal products to subsidize the cost for the blind.
Priced around $100 a pair, the shoes are available for pre-order at Lechal.com.
