The retailer has teamed up with the Hyogo, Japan-based brand for the Kith Football Equipment project to time up with the World Cup.
Launching on June 28, the line features two pairs of shoes — the Gel Lyte III and the GT-II — that were designed to celebrate Team USA’s World Cup journey as well as honor the location of this year’s games, Brazil.
“The Kith Football Equipment project is something we started working on a little over a year ago,” said Fieg, who owns Kith and has worked with Asics for the past seven years. “I wanted to design a capsule that could give people a chance to hold and cherish this moment of time.”
The Gel Lyte III, which features an American-flag sock liner and perforated, all-over gold leather on the vamp, retails for $185, while the blue pigskin GT-II style costs $165.
Fieg explained that the GT-II is “more what you are used to getting from me: premium pigskin upper and quality details on the three stripes [on the heels of the midsole].” Meanwhile, sourcing gold leather made the U.S.-inspired design more challenging to create.
“Ultimately, I believe the USA version came out great and is very different from everything else in the marketplace right now. I made the Gel Lyte III USA model extremely luxe — they’re as premium and rich as any sneaker can be,” Fieg said.
The project will be launched June 28 at the Kith pop-up shop on Bleecker Street, at Kith Brooklyn and on the store’s website.
