Merrell has a new leader.
The outdoor brand announced today that Gene McCarthy will join the company as president, effective Aug. 26. McCarthy was most recently SVP of footwear for Baltimore-based Under Armour, where he was tasked with reinventing and growing the athletic brand’s footwear program before his exit in January.
McCarthy previously has served as co-president of Stratham, N.H.-based Timberland, SVP of global footwear for Canton, Mass.-based Reebok and held a number of positions at Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike.
“Gene McCarthy is a visionary leader with a passion for brands and consumers,” Blake Krueger, chairman, president and CEO of Merrell parent Wolverine World Wide Inc., said in a statement. “I am thrilled to have Gene join the Merrell team as it continues its drive to be the first $1 billion brand in our company’s history.”
“Gene’s global experience and successful track record in the athletic and outdoor markets make him an excellent fit for the Merrell brand,” said Jim Zwiers, president of Wolverine’s Performance Group, which encompasses Merrell. “We are excited to welcome Gene to the team and believe he is uniquely qualified to lead the Merrell brand in its vision to be the world’s favorite outdoor brand.”
For his part, McCarthy said he has been a longtime fan of the brand. “I am excited to join this talented team to pursue the significant opportunities that lie ahead as we capitalize on [Merrell’s] compelling point of view and remarkable products,” he said.
