Via Spiga is going sporty for spring. Under the direction of Creative Director Edmundo Castillo, the brand will introduce a sneaker for the resort collection. “There’s a new shift in the market,” Castillo told Spy. “And that is a more realistic type of shoe — one that girls can walk in comfortably but still look sexy.” The Via Spiga sneaker features a lower silhouette. Castillo, who reintroduced his eponymous label two years ago, said the goal was to fill a need for casual and chic looks. “For the past few seasons, the high heel has taken over,” he said. “Designers have taken advantage of the over-the-top high heel fantasies in the market, but it’s starting to look old.”
Sign of the Times
Ars Sutoria is entering the digital age. The more than 60-year-old shoemaking school based in Milan, Italy, will launch online courses for 2014. And next month, it will offer courses in Boston in conjunction with Two Ten Footwear Foundation. Previous locations have included Thailand, Colombia and Mexico, with classes covering such subjects as technical development of footwear and pattern making.
