Country music artist Josh Turner is reaching out to a different audience as Ariat’s newest brand ambassador. The 35-year-old singer-songwriter discovered the boot brand several years ago while on a concert tour stop in Billings, Mont., where he spotted a pair at Western retailer Lou Taubert. He’s worn the boots on the road ever since, he said, noting their rubber soles help keep him steady on stage. Since 2003, the singer has released five studio albums, and this spring, he heads out on tour again to promote his newest, “Punching Bag.” Ariat will sponsor numerous dates, and Turner appears in the brand’s spring print ad campaign and its website. When it comes to his music, the singer said that he has been inspired by country artists Hank Williams, Randy Travis, Johnny Cash, Vern Godin and John Anderson. “I listen to them because I’m always learning something from what they’ve done,” said Turner. “They’re really good teachers.” Turner is now committed to cultivating new talent himself. In support of music education, he’s created The Josh Turner Scholarship Fund to assist students in pursuing a future in arts and music.
Dream vacation: “Tahiti. From what I’ve seen, it’s absolutely gorgeous and is not somewhere you can just go to on a whim.”
First guitar: “It used to belong to my mama. It’s a Kay acoustic that my granddaddy took and put strings on for me to play.”
A fun Saturday with my kids would be … “To take a boat on the lake, find a little island no one’s on, anchor down and chill. We’ll eat, swim, skip rocks, lay out, enjoy the sunshine and be somewhere without anyone knowing where we are.”
Favorite Southern dish: “Barbecue, rice and red gravy from my hometown of Hannah, N.C. It tastes great, and I can’t make it myself.”
Last place I took my wife on a date: “The movies.”
The sports team I’d like to play for is … “Duke University’s basketball team. It’s my favorite sport and I’ve always been a fan of Coach K.”
