As resort collections continue to soar in commercial importance, designers have again upped the ante with styles that are both wearable and whimsical.
Karl Lagerfeld explored Asian influences with modern signatures in his Chanel collection, staged in Singapore to suit the offering’s tropical accents and thriving Eastern clientele.
Dior similarly showed in a glamorous locale, opting for Monaco to highlight the house’s deep connections there, while capitalizing on the proximity of a bevy of famous faces attending the Cannes International Film Festival. Front-row starlets included Jessica Biel, Marion Cotillard and Liv Tyler, along with Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco. Under Raf Simons’ artistic direction, the Dior resort collection was replete with playful color-blocking, an idea that extended into the footwear via pointy-toe pumps in mixed materials with an artful tie-dye effect.
Other footwear highlights so far include Just Cavalli’s printed block-heel boots and Bottega Veneta’s raffia kitten heels with ankle ties. Femininity reigned — for the most part — with plenty of pointy toes and ankle straps, while masculine silhouettes such as penny loafers also made a strong showing.
