Garmont will launch a new light hiker for men this spring. The low-cut Claw style has abrasion-resistant mesh, rubber-toe bumpers and TPU plates in the heel and midfoot for stability. It comes in both a vented version, at $130, and a Gore-Tex waterproof version, at $160. Both looks feature the HexLock outsole by Hypergrip, with eight IceLock lugs from Portland, Ore.-based Garmont’s winter collection, which uses fiberglass in the rubber to give better grip in icy, wet and dry terrains. The style is targeted to outdoor shops and will deliver in January.
Bozeman, Mont.-based Oboz will debut this spring a lighter-weight performance midsole and outsole, which it will show off in four product launches. Called Granite Peak, the new construction combines a dual-density EVA midsole with a 3/4-length TPU shank/chassis for stability, and deep lugs positioned to give good grip while saving on excess rubber. The Granite Peak midsole and outsole is found in the women’s Luna (at right), a $125 hiking shoe with an all-synthetic breathable upper and welded overlays; the men’s Traverse Low Bdry, a $125 light hiker; the men’s $160 Traverse Mid hiker/backpacker with the brand’s proprietary Bdry membrane; and the men’s $125 Rimrock hiking shoe. All styles will deliver Feb. 15 to outdoor specialty and independent footwear shops.

This spring, Vasque, a division of Red Wing, Minn.-based Red Wing Shoe Co., will debut the Pendulum, the brand’s lightest trail runner yet for men and women. Designed to encourage a forefoot strike and featuring a 6-millimeter drop, the style weighs 10.6 ounces in a men’s size 9. It features a TPU plate for underfoot protection and a rugged outsole for grip. The $110 style will deliver in February to outdoor accounts.
Building on the fall ’12 introduction of its Vendemmia collection, Rockford, Mich.-based Merrell, a division of Wolverine World Wide Inc., will introduce the casual-focused Bazaar collection for men and women for spring ’13. The four women’s styles include an open bootie, two slip-on styles (one shown below) and a flip-flop, all with canvas and fabric details and styling elements meant to evoke Moroccan or Turkish marketplaces. The men’s offering consists of a chukka-style boot, a slip-on moccasin and a laceup, as well as two sandal designs, made with leather and canvas on low-profile sticky rubber outsoles with jute. Prices for the collection range from $70 to $90. The looks will deliver in February to outdoor and independent accounts.
