Nike is hoping to foster the next big digital startup.
The Beaverton, Ore.-based athletic firm announced a new initiative, in partnership with business incubator TechStars, to develop and mentor fledgling tech companies looking to leverage the brand’s digital platforms for activities such as training, coaching and gaming.
As part of the program, dubbed the Nike+ Accelerator, Nike will host 10 startups to be a part of a three-month curriculum beginning in March and culminating in technology investor demonstration days at Nike world headquarters and California’s Silicon Valley.
Participating companies, chosen via application process on Nikeaccelerator.com, will be provided office facilities, software development tools and access to a select list of Nike executives and external mentors.
Mentors for the Nike+ Accelerator include Nike VP of digital sport Stefan Olander, Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai and Facebook engineering manager Alex Himel.
