Skechers has added an Olympian to its squad.
Meb Keflezighi, an Olympic silver medalist and winner of the 2009 ING New York City Marathon, will be the face of the Manhattan Beach, Calif.-based brand’s Fitness line of performance apparel and footwear, including the new GO Run collection of barefoot-like shoes.
According to a release from the company, Keflezighi, who lives and trains in California, will wear the product through August 2012 as he competes in the Olympic trials and other road races, including the 2011 New York City Marathon.
The company noted the athlete will consult on new products and will first be seen in marketing efforts this holiday season, such as print, TV, in-store and event appearances, which will be timed to the release of the brand’s lightweight running product and a new training collection.
“Skechers’ new performance shoes change the way I run for the better,” Keflezighi said in the release. “I’ve been a heel-strike runner my entire life, but I am now wearing Skechers to maximize the efficiency of my foot strike. My shoes are my most essential piece of equipment, and right now, Skechers has the footwear I need to succeed.”
“Meb is a rock star in the running world and the fact that he trusts our revolutionary running product to carry him across the finish line is a huge win for our position in the performance arena,” Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers, said in the release. “As an Olympian and professional athlete, Meb brings real gravitas to Skechers’ performance footwear that will inspire runners around the world to experience our mid-foot-strike technologies for themselves.”
