Edmundo Castillo’s Good Taste

This designer has a full plate. After departing Santoni in the fall, Edmundo Castillo remains creative director at Castañer and is focused on his own lines: the eponymous women’s brand that relaunched last spring and the men’s collection Casbia. He also recently added Via Spiga to his repertoire, taking over as creative director of the label. “Edmundo’s passion and extraordinary talent for shoemaking is energizing, and his design philosophy aligns perfectly with our vision,” said Jay Schmidt, division president of better and image brands at Brown Shoe Co., owner of Via Spiga. “Joining forces with a designer of Edmundo’s caliber will only take us further on our journey to elevate the Via Spiga brand.” While Castillo is keeping mum about the position, he does admit that balancing projects creates both challenges and triumphs. “The start is always the most challenging, but then each one catches its own rhythm,” he said. The ultimate reward, he added, is when each collection sells more than the one before. Here, Castillo dishes on his favorite music, designers and guilty pleasures.

Favorite music to design to:
“All kinds. It depends on the mood [I’m in] when sketching and the mood of the collection. Right now, I’m loving the Black Keys.”

Worst men’s fashion faux-pas:
There’s nothing uglier than those long square-toe shoes and big, chunky, square-toe shapes that we are seeing way too many men wearing lately.”

Guiltiest pleasure:

Hot dogs. “I love Nathan’s, movie hot dogs, street hot dogs, Gray’s Papaya — all of them.”

Most consistent muse:
Kate Moss. “Few women today can wear clothes like her. Not only because she is a beautiful model but her style is unique.”

Most influential designer:
Donna Karan. “I spent almost 15 years working for her. It was my first job designing shoes, and she was the only designer I wanted to work for when I started.”
