Milan Trend: Extreme Embellishments

Flames, flowers, spikes, oh my! Designers upped the ante in Milan this season with over-the-top embellishments that ranged from clever and ironic to borderline gaudy. Perhaps the most exceptional detailing was found at Prada, where Miuccia Prada’s automotive-inspired theme carried into the footwear via flame-like adornments and a fire-like bow. Max Kibardin played with oversized neon silicone spikes on an ankle-strap sandal, while a bouquet of giant blooms in leather, plastic and silk made one Jimmy Choo stiletto an appropriate centerpiece to decorate the table or the foot. Floral details were also on exhibit at Missoni, where acrylic flowers and fringe adorned Lucite high-heel sandals. Furry fringe added texture to Fendi’s cone-heel sandals, as Blumarine went for a more overtly girly take on embellishment with ruched fabric and feathered raffia cuffs. Just when it seemed the “it shoe” was a thing of the past, designers issued a whole fresh crop of unique looks that seemed to say “too much is never enough.”
