There’s no shame in going bare for spring ’12. Designers indulged in some visual trickery this season in Milan, playing with transparent PVC in various hues on chic high-heeled silhouettes. Emporio Armani showed lavender-tinted straps on geisha-like platforms at Emporio Armani, while Sergio Rossi debuted rich blue T-straps with a multicolored Lucite heel. Bottega Veneta took a simple, sophisticated route with barely-there single-soled sandals, and Dolce & Gabbana went for a modern twist on the classic Mary Jane pump by adding clear panels. There was a bit of futurism in Max Kibardin’s cloudy mid-calf boots with ruby-colored Swarovski crystals, as well as in Versus’ see-through cage-toe booties with pastel patent straps. Rarely does a trend work so well on both nostalgic and forward-looking footwear silhouettes.
