Sandal Booties: Hot or Not?

Summer is well under way, and flip-flops aren’t the only warm-weather choice for young women this season. Sandal booties, a new trend that blends sandal and boot elements, is hitting the streets and getting mixed reviews from consumers.

Footwear News recently talked to students at Fairfield University in Connecticut about the unconventional style and whether it’s the season’s “it” shoe. Though several said they’d show off their pedicured feet with the new hybrid, others weren’t as keen to give their old shoes the boot.

1. Taylor Callahan, 19
Hometown: Marblehead, Mass.
Favorite brands: Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Steve Madden
My shoe style: “Really high, bold shoes that you can wear with a simple outfit and make a statement.”
Boot sandals — hot or not? Hot. “They’re a [spin-off] of gladiator shoes. They remind me of the 1980s, when people used to wear the legwarmers with sneakers, but it’s a more fashionable, higher-end idea.”

2. Erica Cianchette, 20
Hometown: Falmouth, Maine
Favorite brands: Aldo, BCBG, Coach, Nine West, Ugg
My shoe style: Funky heels and cork wedges. “I’m also [a fan] of snakeskin leathers and really colorful or sparkly shoes.”
Boot sandals — hot or not? Not. “I never got into the whole gladiator style, so to make it into a boot [makes] it look that much worse.”

3. Leah Fury, 19
Hometown: Mount Laurel, N.J.
Favorite brands: Rainbow, Steve Madden, Aldo
My shoe style: Sandals or flip-flops during the day, and heels at night.
Boot sandals — hot or not? Hot. “It’s a cool idea and gives new flare to a simple sandal. I probably won’t buy a pair, though, because it’s [not really my style].”

4. Megan Daly, 20
Hometown: Marshfield, Mass.
Favorite brands: Havaianas, Rainbow, Toms Shoes, Ugg
My shoe style: Flip-flops, boots and heels.
Boot sandals — hot or not? Hot. “But I just don’t know if I’m ballsy enough to wear something like that.”

5. Caitlin O’Donnell, 19
Hometown: Flourtown, Pa.
Favorite brands: Bakers, Rainbow, Sam Edelman, Ugg
My shoe style: Sandals or flip-flops during the day, and “high, fun and colorful heels at night.”
Boot sandals — hot or not? Not. “I know they’re the new, upcoming trend, but it doesn’t really make sense. People wear sandals when it’s hot out, so why put fabric around your leg like a boot?”

6. Melanie Leo, 20
Hometown: Mountain Top, Pa.
Favorite brands: Bakers, Steve Madden, Ugg
My shoe style: Gladiator sandals, moccasins and sky-high heels. “Five inches is just fine. It’s style over comfort at that point.”
Boot sandals — hot or not? Hot. “They’re on my favorites list. If you wear them with a dress or shorts, you have a little extra [something] to show off.”

7. Tara Hall, 19
Hometown: Vorhees, N.J.
Favorite brands: BCBG, Steve Madden
My shoe style: Sandals and flip-flops in the summer, and boots for winter.
Boot sandals — hot or not? Hot. “[The look] is really stylish and would look cute with a skirt, or pants tucked into the boot part.”

8. Anne Nieuwenhuis, 20
Hometown: Leidschendam, Netherlands
Favorite brands: Asics, BCBG, Charlotte Russe, Nike, Nine West
My shoe style: Heels and embellished sandals. “I like neutral colors, but I want one aspect [of the shoe to] stand out.”
Boot sandals — hot or not? Not. “They look weird. The boot part looks awkward, like it’s not supposed to be there.”
