Wohl Shoe’s Ben Peck Dies at 90

Ben Peck, former CEO of the Wohl Shoe Co. and longtime member of the National Shoe Retailers Association’s board of directors, died Jan. 16 from kidney failure.

In 1937, Peck began his footwear career at Wohl as a salesman. As he worked his way up through the company’s ranks, Peck held various positions, including GMM and VP of retail.

The now-defunct Wohl operated 350 specialty stores and 800 shoe departments for many major department stores when it was acquired by Brown Shoe Co. in 1951. In 1963, Peck was promoted to president and CEO, a position he held at Wohl until his retirement in 1984.

Peck also served on Brown Shoe’s board of directors and executive committee and on the National Retail Merchants Association’s board of directors.
