Street Talk: East vs. West

The country has been pounded with some harsh winter weather this season, and women are braving the elements in boots of every shape and color. But do the icy storms of the East and the powdery snowfalls of the West make a difference in what women are buying? Footwear News hit the streets of New York and Salt Lake City to find out.

THE EASTERN CONTINGENT

1. Ashley Gaia, 24
What do you look for in a boot? “I look for something leather. And the [shaft] height and heel height are important. Price is the determining factor.”
How much are you willing to spend? “$250 if I couldn’t live another day without them.”
Favorite brands: Aldo, Nine West

2. Nicole Keating, 31
What do you look for in a boot? “[Something] stylish, but comfortable. And I always need a heel.”
How much are you willing to spend? “$500 if I absolutely can’t live without the boot.”
Favorite brands: John Galliano, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, YSL

3. Laura Sok, 24
What do you look for in a boot? “Mostly a good price. But I also try to find trends that work for my look.”
How much are you willing to spend? “$250 at most.”
Favorite brands: Camper, Frye, Steve Madden

4. Kellyann West, 25
What do you look for in a boot? “The slimmest part of my body is my legs, so when looking for boots on the taller side, I opt for pairs that are either narrower or have an adjustable strap at the top to keep them from gapping or bunching when I walk.”
How much are you willing to spend? “The max is $300.”
Favorite brands: BCBG, Hush Puppies, Ugg

THE WESTERN CONTINGENT

5. Sabrina Gardner, 29
What do you look for in a boot? “Something that goes with a lot of different things, and you can never have enough boots. Of course, I always go with Uggs on a snowy day.”
How much are you willing to spend? $200
Favorite brands: Anthropologie, Dansko, Frye, Kate Spade

6. Jami Bowen, 29
What do you look for in a boot? “Something different with a different detail, something that isn’t too high-heeled, but isn’t too low. I need a heel, but I have a 2-year-old, so they have to be functional.”
How much are you willing to spend? Less than $300
Favorite brands: BCBG, Jessica Simpson, Miss Sixty, Steve Madden

7. Lisa Elorrieta, 46
What do you look for in a boot? “Fashion. It’s all about something that’s stylish for the year.”
How much are you willing to spend? $150 to $250
Favorite brand: Donald J Pliner

8. Lauren Bushman, 27
What do you look for in a boot? “Diversity, especially here because you have to have your boots working for you with all the snow and salt on the street. It’s important for me to have at least three pairs around: one dressy, one casual and something more fun.”
How much are you willing to spend? “Less than $300, but I have expensive taste, so I look for markdowns.”
Favorite brands: Frye, Ralph Lauren
