The Port Washington, N.Y.-based market research company announced Monday it has launched its first data tracking athletic footwear, sports apparel and equipment sales in Russia. The firm estimated the sports market there to be $5.7 billion in 2008.
Covering consumers ages 16 to 59 living in Russia’s largest cities, NPD’s Sports Tracker Russia report covered September to December 2008. According to the survey, athletic footwear is larger in Russia than sports-style apparel (the reverse is true in the U.S., Canada and some countries in Europe), and that average selling price is also higher for major brands. The outdoor market is also stronger in Russia than elsewhere in Europe, the study found.
