Mark McNairy, design director at men’s specialty retailer J.Press, is taking on a new role as shoe designer. For fall ’08, he is stepping out with his own footwear collection under the Mark McNairy-New Amsterdam name. The line of classic Goodyear-welted footwear is produced in England and is set to retail for $250 to $550. According to the designer, future plans include a full-blown collection of menswear and accessories, all with an American point of view. Included in the debut footwear collection is the New England series of leather and crepe soles and the Red Brick Soul series featuring preppy red-brick EVA bottoms. Silhouettes run the gamut from classic wingtips to tassel slip-ons and chukka boots. The shoes are available for delivery now.
Generic Surplus is taking its cues from the hotel business. Kevin Carney and Brandon Day, founders of Generic Surplus and Generic Man, have created a special-edition Ace Hotel Palm Springs shoe in collaboration with Arkitip, an art magazine based in Hollywood, Calif. The shoe features mesh material for breathability, as well as a non-slip sole. The colors on the shoe — from the white rubber to the army-green suede patch in back — were chosen to match different areas of the Ace Hotel. “In creating a shoe for the hotel we sought to capture the essence of Palm Springs and the eclectic style of the Ace Hotel,” said Day. “It’s the quintessential shoe for enjoying the Palm Springs lifestyle.” For spring ’09, the $85 shoes will be limited to 500 pairs and sold at select retailers worldwide, starting July 1. Pre-sales for men’s sizes are available now on Arkitip.com.
