Georgina Goodman, the British luxury footwear designer, said Tuesday she has won 40,000 pounds, or about $65,000 at current exchange, in an out-of-court settlement with Matalan, a European retailer.
Despite the settlement, Matalan did not admit liability. The original case claimed that Matalan had copied one of Goodman’s designs.
“We will always rigorously defend our collections. Our design is a central platform of our brand and is at the heart of our promise to our discerning clientele,” Goodman said in a statement. “I trust this serves as another clear message: Mass-market operators who peddle cheap copies can search for their ‘inspiration’ elsewhere, or better still, design their products themselves.”
