NEW YORK — Don’t Mess with Deckers. That’s the message the company is sending out by announcing this week that it filed a lawsuit against 15 defendants over infringement of property rights concerning the Ugg Classic Cardy boot. The Goleta, Calif.-based firm said it was issued U.S. Design Patent No. 582,650 back in December, which protects the design of the knit fold-over boot with button detailing.
“Ugg Australia is known by consumers for creating highly desirable and distinctive footwear,” said Stephanie Cucurullo, VP of legal for Deckers, in a statement. “We are disappointed when competitors choose to slavishly copy these styles and [we] take such copying very seriously. We will aggressively protect our intellectual property rights.”
