Amazon.com is going outside.
The Seattle-based e-tailer announced Tuesday it had launched a dedicated outdoor recreation store on its Website. Housed at Amazon.com/outdoors, the new site features an expanded offering of outdoor footwear, apparel and gear.
According to a release, the growth of Amazon’s camping and hiking category was the impetus for the new store, which launches one week before the semiannual Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City. The site stocks hiking boots, sandals, trail runners, climbing shoes and casual styles for men, women and kids from brands including Merrell, Vasque, Lowa, Adidas and New Balance.
“With the growing popularity of the Amazon.com camping and hiking category, we realized our customers were looking to Amazon.com for an expanded selection of apparel, footwear and more gear for snow sports, paddling sports, active travel and climbing,” Ben Hartman, director of Amazon’s sports and outdoors store, said in the release. “We responded by expanding our product offerings, and we invite our customers to share their recommendations and product reviews with the outdoors community on Amazon.com.”
To promote the new store, Amazon.com is offering a limited number of free one-year National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands passes to site shoppers who spend more than $299 on selected items. The company is also offering a download of a preview of Ken Burns’ six-hour PBS documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” which will debut in September. A preorder of the DVD is also available on the Website, and 5 percent of those sales during the month of July will be donated to the National Park Foundation, the charitable arm of America’s National Parks.
