5 Questions for Bodega's Jay Gordon
Kevin Garnett for Chelsea Football Club pack

Kevin Garnett is known for his prowess on the basketball court, but next week, shoppers at Boston’s Bodega will get a window into one of the Celtics star’s other sport passions: soccer.
On Aug. 29 at Bodega, one of Boston’s premier sneaker hotspots, a special Adidas shoe will drop celebrating Garnett’s favorite team, the Chelsea Football Club, which is touring the U.S. this summer. The new Adidas TS Commander LT basketball style will feature a suede upper in CFC’s royal blue and white colorway and the team’s lion crest, as well as a soccer-ball pattern etched on the midsole.
Bodega will be the exclusive retailer of a complete KGxCFC pack, which will retail for $275 and includes the TS Commander LT shoes, as well as a replica CFC jersey with Garnett’s name and number and a CFC/Bodega scarf. The $125 CFC shoe will be available in limited quantities starting Nov. 1 at Adidas Sport Performance stores, Jimmy Jazz and Eurosport.

Footwear News talked to Jay Gordon, co-owner of Bodega, about the collaboration, his shoppers and limited-edition kicks.

FN: What specifically made this collaboration attractive to Bodega’s customers?
JG: Well for starters, we are huge basketball fans and go to a lot of Celtics games. We’re new to soccer, but we’re already converted. The game, the teams, the players, the rivalries — we’re into all of it. And we loved the idea of a cross-sport project, since it hasn’t really been done before. Once we saw how big a fan of Chelsea [Kevin Garnett] was, his enthusiasm became infectious and we had to sign on. Collaborating with Adidas gave us access to a legendary player and team, something you just can’t turn down.

FN: Who will buy the package?
JG: I am hoping it goes to huge Chelsea supporters, and judging from the press coverage the pack has gotten on [soccer] blogs, I think they will turn out.
FN: How important are soccer and basketball to your customer?
JG: Soccer is still a bit behind in the U.S., but it is definitely picking up steam, and I, for one, was very proud of the U.S. National Team’s success this year. The win against Spain [on June 24] was amazing, and I was glued to the Brazil game. Basketball has always been a huge part of the sneaker world and inspires a great deal of the product we carry.

How important are limited-edition releases in general? Has the demand changed in the past several seasons?
JG: Limited-edition releases are important, but good product is more important. It’s nice when you have both, and this collection is something we can claim on both. We’re definitely proud of the way the collection turned out and are looking forward to the launch on Aug. 29 at the store.

FN: How many packages will be offered?
JG: In our store, only 10 packs of the KGxCFC jersey, shoe and scarf. For our consumers who can’t make it out on Aug. 29, we’ll put three packs online at Bdgastore.com.
